Twitter Buys Tweetie App

Twitter announced on Friday that they have offically purchased Atebits, the company which produces the Tweetie iPhone application along with a desktop application for Mac’s.  It’s the first time Twitter has linked up and purchased a fellow company, which is just sign at how well the social network is doing.  

Loren Brichter is Tweetie’s creator, and will be part of the Twitter mobile team.  In a blog post last Friday, Twitter said that the iPhone app will change it’s name from Tweetie to “Twitter for iPhone, and will be made free within the next several weeks. 

“We’re thrilled to announce that we’ve entered into an agreement with Atebits (aka Loren Brichter) to acquire Tweetie, a leading iPhone Twitter client. Tweetie will be renamed Twitter for iPhone and made free (currently $2.99) in the iTunes AppStore in the coming weeks. Loren will become a key member of our mobile team that is already having huge impact with device makers and service providers around the world.”

Twitter also mentioned that an official Twitter iPad app is in the works. “Developers, services, and publishers will be able to leverage the Twitter iPhone and iPad applications to create additional innovative tools and integrations for users,” said Twitter CEO Evan Williams.

Many also wonder why Tweetie and what will come of other Twitter apps like Echofon, Seismic, and Tweetdeck.  Members of the community say that
