Hollywood Banning Social Media

diazmyersWe have all had it happen at one time or another, where we post something that we shouldn’t have and later regret.  Although it hasn’t happened yet many film studios are working on banning the use of social media sites all together to the cast of their films, so that no details of projects will be released.

Dreamworks, which is known most specifically for their computer-animated films, is the first studio to announce that they are currently working on new contracts for Mike Myers & Cameron Diaz, who are scheduled to reprise their roles in the next Shriek saga, which will ban the use of social media sites.   The new contract will state that that the actors will be forbidden from posting any information on any Internet sites.

An IMDB.com article explains, “Filmmakers are becoming increasingly worried about actors ruining plots and damaging the industry by putting up messages on the public website.”

Luckily for both Myers & Diaz, neither of them have social media pages, or public websites they run, but this could cause pandemonium not just for the actors that do, but for their followers and fans as well.  2009 has been the year for celebrities to get on social media sites, and connect with their fans.  Ashton Kutcher, who is a huge supporter of Twitter and other social networking sites is frequently sharing the happenings of his life, and has close to 4,000,000 followers.  During Kutcher’s next project, under the new contract rules, he would not be able to tweet at all, or post pictures while working.   Fans will be disappointed because they’ve gotten a short look “behind-the-scenes” this year with the use of social media.

On the other hand, television programs, such as Live With Regis & Kelly, The CNN Newsroom, & Ellen have all encouraged the cast and crew to Tweet, post pictures, and use social media sites before, during, and after each episode.

At this time, no actors have commented on the new contract rules.

Social media is the life of news. People needs to hear from real people, as what happens as they happen. Banning it from Hollywood would definitely be the biggest wrong move that they could ever do.
